Parts Needed to Tow with a 2018 Mazda CX-9

Question:

We have just purchased a new 2018 Mazda CX-9 and will be adding a trailer hitch. We have a utility trailer with a flat four connector but we may be towing a trailer with electric brakes. My question is: should I wire with a 7 blade for the elec. brake hook up and then use a adapter for the flat four or the other way around? I know we will be towing a small RV trailer with brakes. Thanks

The trailer hitch that I recommend for your 2018 Mazda CX-9 is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76020. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver that has a max gross trailer weight of 4,500 lbs and a max tongue weight of 675 lbs. I looked at the online version of your owner's manual and it looks like your CX-9 has a trailer weight limit of 3,500 lbs. I recommend checking out your owner's manual for towing specifications as well.

When it comes to the wiring you will want to start off with a 4-Way. Use part # 118278 if you have the factory Tow Package or part # C59496 or # 119250KIT if you don't have the tow package. The part # C59496 is spliced in while the part # 119250KIT has quick-connects for the wiring.

From here you need the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 which comes with all of the parts you need to have a fully functioning 7-Way on your CX-9. The connector on it has both a 4-Way and a 7-Way so that you can easily connect to a trailer or accessory.

You also need a ball mount and hitch ball to complete your towing setup. The Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2" Ball - 2" Drop # C45036 is a great option to use but you will want to consult the attached ball mount article to determine if the 2" drop is what you need for your towing setup.

Attached are some installation videos and helpful articles for you to reference.
