I may have a solution for you but Roadmaster dual receiver # RM-077-4 cannot be used for towing trailer and it only has a tongue weight capacity of 400 pounds so it is not a good option. Hitch extender with step # ST12 would be a good option. The only problem is that since it is an extension it will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 33 percent. And it is rated for just 350 pounds tongue weight itself so it isn't a good option either.

If you can tell me the year of the Ram 2500 I can determine if there are custom options that will work and still allow full capacity of the hitch.

Ok, great. I have some good news. There is a step that will fit. It is Bestop bed step # B75306. It is a fit as long as the truck does not have the type of exhaust the exit out right behind the rear tires. The great thing about this step is that it mounts to the truck so it is always there. Your dad won't have to lug around any extra parts like with an extension step. There is also a side step version, # B7541315, which can only be installed on the driver's side. This one is also retractable. Truth be told they are a little on the pricey side but based on customer response they are well worth it!
