Can a Yakima Bike rack for a Class II Hitch Fit in a Curt Class I Hitch on a 2014 Toyota Prius

Question:

We recently installed the Curt # C11276 on our sons Prius. Well later visit him and plan to use our Yakima bike rack on it. So, we tried that Yakima on our own Drawtite hitch receiver and discovered a bump about 3inch into the receiver, that stopped our rack from fully inserting. After a half hour of grinding I removed it so the Yakima fit. Do you know if the Curt on our sons Prius also has that bump / stop inside the receiver? Ive asked him to check, but dont trust that he knows what to look for.

Curt Class I trailer hitches do not have that stop in them. That stop is there to prevent accidental overloading of a Class I hitch. It allows only Class I compatible accessories to be used. In terms of bike racks a Class I hitch is only rated for a maximum of 2 bikes. The reason isn't the weight but rather how far that weight is from the receiver. A third or more bikes will create too much leverage on the hitch receiver and can damage it and the vehicle. I have actually seen it happen; receivers tilted downward 45 degrees from overloading.

You should also be aware that Curt does require the use of stabilization strap # 18050 when using the Class I hitch on the Prius with anything other than a trailer per their warranty requirements. I have linked a video showing how the strap works.
