Weight Distribution Hitch for 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

I have a 2018 Toyota 4runner. Toyota has confirmed that I may use a WDH with the vehicle. My trailer is 21 feet long and has a 3336# GVWR. Can you suggest a WDH? With the WDH, what would the tongue weight be and how would I measure it?

There is going to be a weight distribution system that works for your 2018 Toyota 4Runner, but those systems are not vehicle-specific. In order to choose the best weight distribution system you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 4RUnner.

The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the etrailer # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your vehicle and you'll have your TTW.

The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity. I've added a link to our page with each of our weight distribution systems for you to come back to once you determine your TTW or if you let me know what it is I'd be happy to make a recommendation for you.

As I mentioned in my previous answer the tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR and you will need to measure it by using the Sherline # 5780 scale or one of the methods in the help article on determining tongue weight I previously linked for you. Since your trailer has a GVWR of 3,336 lbs it may have a tongue weight of 450 lbs and if you have 100 lbs of gear that would make your total tongue weight 550 lbs. A great weight distribution hitch for that total tongue weight would be the Reese Strait-Line # RP66083 which is for total tongue weights between 400 lbs and 800 lbs and uses a cam system to prevent sway while also allowing you to back up. This weight distribution system will require a hitch ball, either # A-90 for a 2" ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16" ball. I've added links to video reviews of the Strait-Line system for you to take a look at as well.
