Does The Use of a Reducer Affect the Tongue and/or Trailer Weight Capacity?

Question:

I purchased a travel trailer recently that I tow with a 2016 Ram 2500 which uses a 2 1/2inch shank. They, without consulting me first, installed a 2inch Curt TruTrack weight distribution hitch using this exact adapter/reducer. The travel trailer is a 2018 Keystone Cougar 27RES and it has a dry weight of 6,430 lbs and a max weight of 8,800 lbs. Should I be worried about reduced tongue weight capacity or overall towing capacity?

Expert Reply:

The Curt Hitch Adapter # C45405 will not reduce the tongue weight of your hitch. Many adapters that extend the length will reduce towing capacity based on tongue weight, but this adapter isn't one of them. It will work fine with the Curt TruTrack weight distribution system, but it may add to the noise of your system. If you want to, you can use the Curt Weight Distribution Shank for 2-1/2" Hitches # C17131 to better work with your hitch and system. A reducer isn't bad, but it isn't the best solution either.
