Maximum Weight Capacity of Dealer Installed Roof Rack Crossbars on 2016 Ford Explorer

Question:

Hello, Im thinking of buying a 2016 ford explorer with cross rails. Whats the maximum weight that I can put on those crossrails? I have a 75 pound canoe that Id like to carry up there in the summer. I also have a Thule force 625 cargo box that I use to carry skis in the winter. I was hoping to put the cargo box right onto the cross rails.

The OEM crossbars for the 2016 Ford Explorer or any aftermarket roof racks are limited to 100 lbs for non-moon roof applications or 45 lbs if you have the moon-roof. This is not due to the strength of the bars, but rather the limitations on roof capacity by the manufacturer.

So, if you do not have the moon roof, you will be able to carry your 75 lb canoe. I recommend using the Thule Portage Canoe Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - Gunwale Brackets - Side Loading # TH819 to make carrying your canoe easy with supports on the top rail of your canoe. I've attached a video of this product to assist. You will need your crossbar spread to be between 24 and 36 inches for this application.

Your Thule Force 625 rooftop cargo box will work on your bars as long as the crossbar spread is between 23-5/8 inches and 35-1/2 inches. For your applications, I recommend you use a crossbar spread of 35 inches on center to fit both these applications and give you a wider base.
