Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring for 2000 Toyota 4Runner and 2017 Subaru for 2004 Aliner
Question:
Towing 2004 Aliner trailer that has a seven blade connector currently swapping/using a Hopkins 7 blade to flat 4 adapter. Vehicles 2000 Toyota 4Runner/2017 Subaru Outback are currently wired with a non-factory flat four connectors. I want to wire each vehicle with a Hopkins 7 blade to enable electric brakes, power to trailer for battery charging/appliance use while moving and an additional aux power lead yellow wire on Hopkins? should I find a use for it later. I want to be able to share the brake controller between vehicles. IF possible the Subaru may have a controller harness that is plug and play AND has 10 ga wires for power going to the trailer aux/brakes. The Toyota may require that I wire it using the existing Hopkins I already have and what ever 10 gauge universal kit that will enable that. Suggestions?

For your 2000 Toyota 4Runner as well as your 2017 Subaru Outback, you will need to use a hardwired connection for your brake controller. There is a simple way to use the wiring you suggested to connect to your 4-way flat adapter and give you the options you desire. I recommend the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow 4-Way Flat to 7-Way RV Trailer Adapter w/ 4-Way Vehicle End Plug # HM47180. This will connect to your existing 4-way and then you will need to run wires for the 12V power (charge) line, the brake controller output line, and connect the reverse light signal. To do this, you can use # 5506 which will give you the wiring, circuit breakers, and connectors needed. This system will install the same way as our # ETBC7 kit that I've attached videos of to assist.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is an easy to use controller with LCD screen to make operation and diagnostics easy to read and understand. It has presets to make towing your 2004 Aliner trailer extremely easy. For a second vehicle to use the same controller, you will simply want the Replacement Mounting Bracket Kit for Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # TK5906 and separate quick connecting pigtail harness # 20160.
