Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring with 7-Way Plug
Question:
I have a homemade trailer I got used. whoever wired it used scrap wires so tracing them was impossible when I had to replace my 7 pin plug. I decided to just run new wires from each tail light on my trailer they are double function brake/signal lights . each light is individually grounded and I have each light wired the same way into the plug and have the ground wire running from the plug to the trailer and grounded there. Only my left side lights are functioning. looking for some insight that maybe there is a step Im missing.

I recommend checking your functions based on the plug location using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to confirm power transfer. If you are getting power when trailer is not connected and power on the lead wire function, then the ground may be the issue. Most of the time if you have one function working and the other is not, it is due to a short in the wire providing power or a bad ground connection.
You can test the trailer wiring when disconnected from the vehicle by just connecting a 12V battery. This will help determine if your wiring or light fixture or bulb is bad.
I've attached an article to assist with function locations. Since you have previously had poor connections, you may # HS381-9000 to give you the molded connector and a common ground location for your trailer.
