Why is Weight Capacity of Trailer Hitch Receiver Confirmed to Fit Greater Than Vehicle Tow Rating

Question:

I purchased a class III trailer hitch model C13093 which is custom built to fit my 2016 Chrysler 300. The hitch is rated for 3500 lb load. However I now learn my vehicle is only rated for 1000 lb capacity. Was planning to pull a cargo trailer load of about 2000 lbs. Dont know if I dare use it. Please advise.

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13093 is a confirmed fit for your 2016 Chrysler 300 and is also a fit for a few other models like the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challengers of certain model years. The towing capacity of your vehicle is 1000 lbs as you mentioned, and it is not uncommon for trailer hitch receivers to be rated much higher than the vehicles they are made to fit. This is the case of your vehicle and hitch receiver but the hitch manufacturers test them apart from the vehicle for strength.

Although many people will tow a load beyond the manufacturers listed capacities, I can't recommend you do so as it may damage your vehicle and void your warranty.
