Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport or a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Question:

I am trading Jeeps and plan to get a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Do any of the items change for the 2016 vs the 2013 list you gave me? Do you sell the bolts and nuts to attach the (Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms) to the Jeep separately as I would most likely have to cut them off due to the red loctite.

To flat tow your 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport behind your RV you will need a Base Plate Kit, Tow Bar, Safety Cables, Vehicle Tow Bar Wiring, a Supplemental Braking System, and possibly a High-Low Adapter. There are a couple of great brands that we carry for all of this equipment and a lot of it depends on what kind of setup you want when it comes to the brand.

The 2 dominating brands for the Base Plate and Tow Bar are Blue Ox and Roadmaster. Although they are very similar in quality I prefer the Roadmaster brand. For your Jeep I recommend going with the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit # RM-521448-4 which has removable arms for a more OEM look when you are not flat towing. Since manufacturers create Tow Bars that are specific fits for their brand I also recommend a Roadmaster Tow Bar, like the Falcon All Terrain # RM-522. A great feature of most of the Roadmaster Tow Bars is that they can fold up in a storage position without needing to be removed from the hitch receiver of your RV.

The Falcon All Terrain is rated for 6,000 lbs so for comparable Safety Cables I recommend the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643. The coiled design will help to keep them from dragging on the ground and getting damaged.

For Vehicle Tow Bar Wiring I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. I like this kit because once it is installed on your Jeep you will simply need to use the 7-Way to 6-Way plugs to activate the lights on your Jeep. This option also looks much better than magnetic lights.

Since most States now require the use of a Supplemental Braking System while flat towing, and the fact that it makes your setup much more safe, we always recommend the use of one. For your setup I recommend using the Air Force One # SM99243. It's designed specifically for motorhomes with air brakes like your Berkshire. This way you won't experience any false braking on the Jeep when using the coach's exhaust brake. You need to install the Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit # RM-88400 as well.

To ensure that you have a level flat towing setup it is typically best to use a High-Low Adapter. I have attached a link to our selection of Adapters for you to check out as well as a helpful article to help you decide which one is best for you (or if you even need one).

I have also attached some installation videos to help you with the installation process.

Be sure to check your owner's manual as well for any specific instructions on flat towing your Jeep.

You will actually be using the exact same parts. The Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit # RM-521448-4 that I recommended will fit your 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited as long as it has the factory standard bumper with no winches or guards. It is good that you are wanting to replace the hardware because it should only be torqued down once anyways. I spoke with my contact at Roadmaster who said that the Replacement Hardware for Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-521448-5HK actually includes the same nuts and bolts that you would need to install the EZ4. You can use that part number for replacement hardware.
