Questions About Towing a Skeeter SX 170 Bass Boat with a 2005 BMW X3 and Wiring
Question:
Hi there, As I want to tow a bass boat Skeeter SX170, I would like to install draw-tight hitch. I heard Draw-Tight is most popular and proven in bass boat industry - do you agree? My car is BMW X3 2.5/2005 year model. A few questions.. Q1. What do I need to buy as a complete set? I couldnt find Electrical Bracket components, etc. Q2. As my X3 is 2005 model, seems like I dont need to cut the bumper, as kinda removable door. But the instruction says Trim the inner fascia to same profile as the access door. in Step 2.b. I wonder if we really need to trim it? Q3. I heard BMW is difficult to install electric circuit such as 119250KIT in DIY as it is difficult to hack - some kind of computer security protection are there. Do you suggest me to ask the BMW dealer to install those things, any remark..?

I agree, Draw-Tite is one of the most popular hitches on the market today. For your 2005 BMW X3 the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, item # 75371, would be a great choice for towing a Skeeter SX170 bass boat.
To complete your towing package you will need wiring, a ball mount with pin and clip, and a properly sized hitch ball. I have provided links to the items recommended for your vehicle and some instructions that will help. For mounting the 4-Way connector at the rear of the vehicle I would recommend the No-Drill Mount Bracket, item # 18140, and the 4-Pole Flat Mounting Bracket, item # 18144.
Trimming the inner fascia may not be needed or it may only need to be partially trimmed. I imagine with the installation of a wiring mounting bracket you will need the area to be trimmed for room to mount the bracket.
Installation of the # 119250KIT wiring harness on the 2005 BMW X3 is not as difficult as some would make it sound. If you are familiar with wiring and circuit testing, you should have no problems. If wiring is not your strong suit, you will be better off having the dealer install it. You will need to carefully read the installation instructions prior to and during installation. Pay special attention to the instructions in step 9 under 3 wire system C and D. Vehicle specific instructions are provided there, once you determine, by testing, the circuits present on your vehicle.
