Why Do Trailer Hitches Have Higher Capacities when Used with Weight Distribution System

Question:

Im looking at your hitches for my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 and they have two ratings: tow rating and Weight Distribution rating. What do those mean and why are they significantly different? What else is needed to get the weight distribution rating. Thanks

Weight distribution systems are designed to help distribute the tongue weight of the trailer to the front axle of the tow vehicle, in doing so they also can increase the towing capacity of a vehicle. That's the case with the Draw Tite hitch part # DT45509 that you referenced. When you use a weight distribution system with this hitch you get higher towing capacities. For more information on weight distribution systems check out the FAQ article I attached.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow, this figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight.
