You can absolutely wire your trailer for both turn signals and brake lights using only one light per side, as long as each light has either 3 wires (tail lights, stop/turn, ground) or 2 wires with a ground that goes through the mounting hardware.
When using a 4-Way connector, this is very standard and typically how the trailer lights will be wired. You will have no issue wiring your trailer in this manner. I have included an article on trailer wiring that you might also find helpful.
