Difference Between Class I and Class II Trailer Hitches in Relation to Bike Rack Compatibility

Question:

I have a 2003 toyota corolla sedan. What is difference between a class 1 and class 2 trailer hitch? A 2-bike rack Apex brand calls for a class 2 hitch, 1 1/4in.

The trailer hitches we currently have available that are confirmed to fit your 2003 Toyota Corolla are all Class I hitches. The different class ratings for trailer hitches primarily refer to the maximum weight the hitch can safely handle. The size of the receiver opening will also differ between class ratings. For example, Class I and Class II hitches have a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening while higher class hitches will typically have a 2 inch receiver opening.

If you do not yet have a trailer hitch installed on your Corolla, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 24913. This will provide a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds and is custom-fit for your vehicle. Unlike the Curt option that is also confirmed to work with your Corolla, the Draw-Tite model does not require you to use stabilizing straps for non-trailer loads such as bike racks and cargo carriers.

As you mentioned, bike racks will also have a listed class rating, which refers to the trailer hitches that they are compatible with. While both Class I and Class II trailer hitches have the same 1-1/4 inch receiver opening, Class I hitches will often be designed so that Class II accessories like bike racks cannot fit properly, preventing the hitch from being overloaded by a higher rated carrier. This is why the bike carrier you mentioned is compatible with Class II hitches but not a Class I.

I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of Class I hitch-mounted bike racks for you to look through. I recommend looking at the Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR. This is a great 4-bike rack that is compatible with Class I trailer hitches and features a tilting mast to allow for easy rear cargo access on your vehicle. I recommend adding a hitch lock # THSTL2 and cable lock # TH538XT to secure the carrier to your Corolla and your bikes to the carrier.

I have attached a demonstration video on this product for you to check out.
