Recommended 4 Bike Rack for a 2006 Toyota RAV4

Question:

Hi There! Im interested in these 2 items: Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Rack. Item # HR1400 etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2 Item # e98864 We have a 2006 Toyota RAV 4, which has a spare tire on the rear door. Might you know if well have a problem when bringing the rack upright not in use position? Im afraid there will be not enough distance between the upright rack and the spare tire. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Best,

The etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98864 is a confirmed fit for your 2006 Toyota RAV4 and has a max Gross Trailer Weight of 3,500 lbs and a max Tongue Weight of 525 lbs. In an installation video that we shot on a 2007 RAV4 we found from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the rear bumper to be 3-1/4 inches.

Going with that measurement, the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Rack # HR1400Z might not fit when folded up. You can check to make sure by doing a little bit of measuring. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack when folded up is 5 inches. This means that it will leave you roughly 1-3/4 inches of room when folded up. Even though this means it will most likely not fit, you can check by measuring from the outermost edge of your bumper to the outermost edge of your spare tire.

If this is an issue then I have the perfect solution for you. The Yakima HoldUp Platform Rack # Y02443-2 is a 4 bike carrier that is very similar to the Hollywood Sport Rider. The great thing about this bike rack is that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rack body when folded up is 7 inches. This would be more room to clear your spare tire.

You could also look at the Saris Freedom Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount - Tilting # SA4414B which would give you 10 inches when folded.

Please keep in mind that you will want to verify the tongue weight capacity of your RAV4 before using either of these bike racks as the Sport Rider weighs about 85 lbs and the HoldUp is 98 lbs and the Saris is 53 lbs. You will need to add the weight of your bikes on top of that as well.

I have attached an installation video of the hitch on a 2007 RAV4 for you to check out as well as reviews of both bike racks.
