Can I Use JB Weld On Spring Seats in Over-Under Conversion Kit
Question:
I have a 2,000 lb utility trailer, and have no intention of ever installing brakes. I would like to do an Under to Over axle swap, but do not have access to welding equipment. I have read somewhere that the spring seats should be welded. Instead of actually welding them, can I use something like JB Weld as a substitute?

You are correct that the spring seats included in an over/under conversion kit like the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Kit # K71-384-00 should be tack welded on in most cases. I checked with one of my engineering contacts over at Dexter and he did confirm that you could use JB weld in this case, as it would be better than no weld at all. With that being said, they did still say that a good tack weld is preferred, but not always available.
If you're going to go the JB weld route, you'll want to make sure that the parts are cleaned off well, so that there is a clean surface on all parts that will provide the best bonding conditions.
