How To Convert A 4-Flat Connector To A 7-Way Connector On A 2006 Ford F-150

Question:

Hey there, hope things? are going good? I appreciate all of your help of course and have another question about my truck. While looking under the truck bed and following the four pole wiring harness to the frame rail I came across a plug-in bundle that has all of the wires for the seven pin plug. I have the orange, blue, wires that I believe are needed for a hard wire four pin to seven pin. I was reading a question and answer about a 2010 ford with factory four pole like mine and this was the fix, to hardwire the four pole seven pin combo directly behind this bundle on the frame rail except for ground. Keep in mind I have the 2006 f150 factory four flat setup. Please help me figure this one out before I buy wires I dont need or cut into wires I shouldnt. Thanks very much.

You are correct, some models of the 2006 Ford F-150 came equipped with pre-installed tow package wiring for both 4-flat and 7-way trailer wiring options. You will need to splice into the corresponding wires located just before the plug-in bundle leading to the 4-flat wiring harness.

To install a fully functional 7-way, you will want our Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole part # 37185. The 4-flat to 7-way adapter will plug into your existing factory harness and will only require you to hardwire 3 wires which will be located at the end of your plug-in bundle near the spare tire. To extend the existing wiring harness to your new adapter, I recommend 3-4 feet of the Deka Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge, Brake Wire part # 10-2-1 in addition to our Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors part # 11755.

I have attached an installation video of the adapter installed on a similar 2009 Ford F-150 for your review. The 4 to 7 pole installation will start at the 6 minute mark. Please note the wire colors you will need to hardwire into may not be the same as in the video. In order to find the correct wires on your vehicle, you will want to use a circuit tester like our LCD Digital Circuit Tester part # PTW2992.
