Is Acura RDX Vehicle Warranty Affected by Installing Aftermarket Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver

Question:

Im thinking of installing the Draw-Tite 75784 hitch on my just purchased a 2017 Acura RDX AWD SUV. This hitch will be used for attaching a bike rack with three bikes on it. I asked authorized Acura service today whether they could do it. They replied that they could do it but installing any Class III hitch would void my transmission warranty. Is this true? I am not going to tow anything but only carry three bikes on a rack.

Installing a hitch on a vehicle in order to use a 3-bike hitch bike carrier will not void your vehicle's transmission warranty if the hitch is installed in accordance with the written instructions and used within the weight bearing capabilities of the vehicle.

Consumers are protected from such concerns by the Federal Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. The Act states, in part, that if something breaks on your vehicle and you take it in for warranty repair, the dealer must honor your warranty unless whatever modifications you have added to your vehicle actually caused the problem in question. Clearly, a bike rack holding 3 bikes will have no effect on your Acura transmission.

If you look at the pricing of the aftermarket hitches we offer and compare to the dealer pricing for OEM hitch packages you will quickly see why dealers do their best to discourage owners from buying aftermarket products. They usually cost far less.

Draw-Tite hitch # 75784 is an excellent choice for a 2-inch Class III hitch for your RDX. It offers a 400-lb tongue weight (TW) rating, plenty for a bike rack and three bikes. I linked a video for you showing the hitch installation process.

The linked page displays for you Class III bike carriers that you might consider if you do not already have one. For a biking family one of the best options is a tilting away rack like the Thule Hitching Post # TH934XTR.
