Trailer Hitch Ground Clearance to Fit 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question:

Hi, I had a Draw-Tite 24660 on my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix since 2013. When we moved last year, we had a driveway where I would scrape the receiver every so often. Last weekend, the rear driver side bolt sheared in half while carrying two bikes on the highway and the weight of the two bikes and rack bent the receiver. Im guessing the bolt had gotten a little stressed from the occasional scrapes with the ground. The received also stuck out a bit from the bumper and seemed a little lower and further rearward than I would have liked. Do you guys have something a little lower profile for a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix? I would also be interested in a Class 2 instead seeing how bent the Class 1 got with a bike rack and combined 50 lbs of bicycles. Do you know if the Draw-Tite or Curt Class II offerings would have more ground clearance when installed??

We do offer a Class II hitches that will fit your 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, but the ground clearance on these hitches will be less than your current hitch. The chances of contact with your driveway would be higher.

An option that you may consider would be to use a trunk mounted bike rack. If you are only using the hitch for carrying your bikes, then the trunk mounted hitch will remove the issue of contact with your driveway.

A trunk mounted rack that I recommend that is a confirmed fit for your vehicle is the Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier, # TH910XT. This rack will carry two bikes and has a weight capacity of 35 lbs per
bike. The rack has foam padded bars that will rest on the trunk and bumper of your car. The rack will be secured to the vehicle using straps.

The Curt Class II Hitch, # C12225, has a measured ground clearance of 9-1/2 inches which is the same as your current Draw-Tite hitch has.
