What is the Difference Between Bias Tires and Radial Tires

Question:

My trailer now has a 205-75D-14 tires but I would like to go to a Radial. I am concerned about the lack of wall stiffness/strength.

When you are comparing a Bias tire, like part # AM3S450, and a Radial tire, like part # TR20514, the deciding factor on which one to use really comes down to the trailer that the tire will be on and what the trailer is used for.

You are right that the Bias tires do have a stiffer sidewall, but that doesn't mean that they are stronger. The strength of a tire comes from the Load Range that it has. The stiffness of the Bias tire makes it better suited for off-road applications like farming. People who use Bias tires are not as concerned with a smooth ride for the contents inside the trailer since they are off-road anyways.

Radial tires, on the other hand, are better suited for road use. Their sidewall is not as stiff so it can flex a little bit which helps to make the ride a little smoother. Again, the strength of the tire is based off of the Load Range. Another reason why Radial tires are better suited for the road is that they are typically rated for higher speeds. A lot of times when people have a blow-out, they think it is because their tire was too weak when in reality it is usually because of the heat buildup in the tire and/or improper tire pressure. Since Radial tires are made to withstand the friction caused by higher speeds on the roads, this makes the Radial tires better for road applications.

A great Radial trailer tire that I recommend for you is the Taskmaster Provider # TR20514 a Load Range C rating (1,760 lbs at 50 psi) and has a max speed rating of 81 mph (speed rating M).
