Parts Needed When Adding Brakes to a 3,500 Lbs. Axle

Question:

I want to add electric drum brakes to my homemade boat trailer... I know what I need to do with the electrical, etc... I have a brake controller, etc.. We pulled the bearings out of one wheel and have the numbers... Trailer has dual 3500 pd axles 2 3/8 and wheels are 5 on 4 1/2... Axle is setup for EZ Lube and has grease fittings in the end... Bearings are L44649 and L68111... I want to replace everything from the spindle up while I am at it... So I need to know which brakes, hubs/drums, bearings, races, etc... All of it...

With a 3,500 pound axle you'll need brake flanges with a 4-bolt pattern like # 4-35. Your trailer may already have these and if so that's good. The brake flange needs to be welded to the end of the axle to support the brake assemblies. It will need to be welded perfectly straight for your brakes to function properly so the work should be performed by a certified trailer shop.

For brake assemblies, I recommend # AKEBRK-35-SA Left and Right Side Brake Kit. This kit will include 2-10 inch diameter brake assemblies, one for the left trailer side and one for the right. These assemblies will mount to the 4 bolt brake flanges that you may or may not installed on your axle. These assemblies are self-adjusting and only need an initial adjustment at the time of installation.

The brake drum hubs that will work with your axles will be # AKHD-545-35-K. You will need to order two assemblies and they will include bearings, seals, races (installed in hub), lugs, and dust caps.

The picture you sent has Bearing Buddies installed on your spindles. For a new set of Bearing Buddies, use # BB1980A.

I also recommend using the LubriMatic Disc/ Drum and Wheel bearing Grease, # L11465, when installing your brakes and drums. I also recommend a bearing packer, # L70025, to pack your wheel bearings with grease at installation.

If you can tells us what year your vehicle is , then we can make sure you have all the parts needed for installing your brake controller in your vehicle.

I have attached a few articles brakes, wheel bearing installation and installing a brake controller for you to review.
