Can a Brake Controller be Installed on a 2000 Monaco Dynasty with Exhaust Brake

Question:

What unit do I need the P3? is there any thing i will need to do with the exhaust brake? I have been told there is a relay that might be needed? This would be on a 2000 Monaco Dynasty. Probably not pre-wired for Brake controller as far as i know.

From what I understand on some vehicles the exhaust brake can activate the brake lights. If that is the case with your 2000 Monaco Dynasty you will need to check to see if there is power on the brake switch wire that a brake controller taps into when the exhaust brake is activated. This will require one person to drive the RV and one person to test the wire with a meter. An open parking lot rather than a road would be ideal.

If there is power on that wire with just the exhaust brake active then it can back feed to the brake controller. To avoid that causing any problems you would install a diode # RM-690 between the brake controller and where it taps into the brake switch so that power cannot back feed to the controller.

If there isn't any power when you test then there is already a diode or something in place to prevent back feeding to the brake switch.

If the RV brake lights do not come on when the exhaust brake activates then there are no worries. The P3 # 90195 is an excellent brake controller and I do recommend it. If your RV already has a 7-Way trailer connector then you would need enough wire, # 10-2-1 sold by the foot, to go from the cab to the rear of the RV as well as enough to go from the controller to the battery for power. You will also need a 30 amp circuit breaker # PK54530.

Now if the RV has air brakes then it is possible that there isn't a brake switch to tap into. If that is the case you would have to get power for the brake controller red wire from any dedicated brake light only circuit such as a CHMSL fuse. I have included some links that will help with a hardwire installation.
