Recommended 4 Way Trailer Wiring And Possible 7-Way Upgrade On 2016 Dodge Durango
Question:
If choosing to install just the flat 4 connector type wiring kit for trailer lights, does the power need to come directly from the battery? There is a 12v wire available that feeds the flashlight in the cargo area. Additionally, if you choose the OEM style kit with the 7 way plug, is there a computer change that needs to happen from the dealer?

For your 2016 Dodge Durango, the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # HM11142214 is a great option to install a 4-way flat connection. The 12V battery wire, should be run directly to the battery using the inline fuse and not spliced into another accessory wire. This wire powers the unit and protects your factory wiring from issues.
If your vehicle already has a factory tow package, you can use the OEM kit with 7-way. If not, to get a 7 way, you can use the 4 way harness listed above and an adapter like the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector # 30717. However, if you wish to make the 7 way functional, I recommend the # ETBC7 and a brake controller like # 90195.
