Is a Module Needed To Safely Install Trailer Lighting on a 2007 Nissan Xterra
Question:
The mechanics at my local shop told me that I need a module for the wire kit to protect the computer on my 2007 Nissan Xterra. What does this mean? They said without the module my computer can become fried.

Your local mechanic is more than likely correct. Newer vehicles have sensitive components and thinner wires than ever before and adding trailer wiring that is powered by the vehicle wiring can overload the wires or sensitive circuitry and cause any number of problems.
The solution to your dilemma is a Modulite powered wiring harness. This type of harness is designed so that it uses the signal from the vehicle wiring to activate the trailer wiring functions, but the power is provided for the trailer from a wire that is ran directly to the vehicle battery. This means that the vehicle circuitry is only providing a few milliamps to activate the stop, turn and tail light functions for the trailer.
On your 2007 Nissan Xterra the Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Trailer Connector, item # 43605, is the correct wiring for your vehicle. This harness plugs inline with the vehicle tail lights and a power wire and ground wire need to be ran to complete the installation.
You could also use the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, item # 118263, on your 2007 Nissan Xterra. With this harness you may also need to add an OEM relay harness if the tail light function is not present in the connector at the back of the vehicle. The OEM harness is only available from the Nissan dealer. Models with factory tow packages have the relay harness installed. Directions are linked for you to review.
