Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Controller that Only Works with Manual Override Lever
Question:
This part worked just like the one I replaced on my 2015 Dodge Ram. The trailer brake only works if you manually press the lever with your hand. It will not work when you press the brake on the truck. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This is a fairly common problem and the solution is the red wire of the brake controller.
Make sure it is connected to a circuit that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when released. Most likely the connection is the issue and just reconnecting the circuit will cause the controller to work again. Typically if the controller is installed with a harness like the part # 3024-P and this problem arises the issue is a blown third brake light fuse on the vehicle.
