Should 4-Pole Trailer Connector Be Stored Inside Vehicle or Mounted Externally
Question:
Does the 4 blade connector come out of vehicle at hitch?
asked by: Harold L
Expert Reply:
A 4-pole wiring harness like Curt # C56158 or Tekonsha # 118561 can simply be pulled from the back of the vehicle when you need it for towing a trailer. The wiring will be safe with the hatch closed on it (as long as you avoid the latch mechanism) since the weather stripping will protect it.
Wiring brackets are built-in to some hitches and separate brackets are made for mounting these connectors externally, like # 18144, but for many people keeping the 4-pole protected inside the vehicle is the better option for occasional towing. Doing so keeps the connector safer from road salt, debris and other potential hazards. If you want to have the 4-pole permanently mounted near the hitch the you will need to route it outside the vehicle and install a bracket on the bumper cover.
