Trailer Wiring Harness Stopped Working After Backing Up Trailer Into Water
Question:
I had this kit on my Rav for about 7 years just for a utility trailer. Last week I put my jet ski in the water. The lights stopped working. There is no voltage coming out of the connector to the trailer. I noticed the converter looks like it is swelled up. I checked the fuses and verified I have 12 volts going back to the converter. Are these converters made to handle this? Do I need to unplug this before going in the water?

It is best to unplug trailer wiring before backing into the water. This helps reduce the chance for a bad short that could take out a wiring harness like your Tow Ready # 118412. If you are an optimistic type of guy, you can take heart in the fact that the harness took that hit rather than the internal wiring in your RAV4. That's is one of the benefits of a powered harness like the Tow Ready; it not only can deliver more power for your trailer's lights, it will protect your vehicle wiring. Its a lot easier and less costly to replace an aftermarket harness than the wiring in your car.
Since your fuses are good and you have +12V reaching the converter, this tell us it has fried and needs to be replaced. Since this part is still current your re-install of the new harness will be easier since much of the work to run the power wire is already done.
