Special Fittings Required to Install a Transmission Cooler in a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 Liter
Question:
2012 Silverado 1500 with factory tow package. An external trans cooler is installed. Towing a 7100 lb TT new to this truck. We were towing a 6100 lb TT. Rocky Mountain passes trans heated to 230 F many times. Looking for some more cooling for the trans. Thinking about adding the #13504 to the existing cooler. concerned about the fittings going from the old cooler to the new cooler and returning from new cooler to the existing flared return to the trans. Would I cut the aluminum flared off of the existing aluminum cooler return line and add the new rubber line to the new cooler return fitting? Or is there a fitting between the rubber and the aluminum flair? Is there barb fittings connecting the old cooler and the new cooler? Sorry so dense but just lacking in the how to. Thanks for your help.

To install transmission cooler # D13504 in your 2012 Chevy Silverado 5.3 liter you will also need fitting # D13035. This fitting will allow you to install the cooler without having to cut and flare the factory lines.
The flow of the transmission fluid will go from the transmission, to the factory cooler, out from there to the Derale cooler, and then from there back to the transmission. Adding a second cooler will be a tremendous help in keeping the transmission fluid temperature down closer to 200 degrees.
I have included a link to a video showing an example installation and a link to our help article on transmission coolers for you.
