Transmission Cooler Recommendation for 2011 GMC Yukon XL 1500
Question:
Hello, I have a 2011 GMC Yukon XL 1500. I have a factory basic tow package with a 3.08 rear axle ratio. I have been trying to narrow down if I have what GM calls 5kl Heavy duty cooling package but I don’t see anything installed in front or behind the radiator. In addition the GM factory HD cooling package comes with an rear axle ratio of 3.42 which I don’t have. Needless to say i believe I don’t have the extra tow package to get me to the max tow of 8000 that is achievable if I have the 5kl HD cooling package. Therefore I’m at stuck at around 5000lbs towing capacity. I tow a 4600 lbs travel trailer and I’m concerned on trips to mammoth here in California that my performance will be impaired. Two years ago in hot weather I was sweating as I could see the temp clim above 210 while hitting a long incline almost 8 miles I I would rather not repeat that. Can you recommend the best option for an external tranny cooler and possible accessories I would need to give my car some help when towing. Thank you.

The good news is that 210 degrees isn't the worst temperature for a transmission to get to when towing. Ideally it's under 200 but you haven't done massive damage to your transmission. For your 2011 GMC Yukon XL I recommend the Derale cooler part # D13504 as it is a very large and efficient style of cooler since it's a plate-fin that measures 11" Wide x 12" tall x 7/8" deep. The adapter fitting you'd need is the part # D13035 to make installing the cooler as easy as possible.
