Towing a Trailer with 2014 Mustang GT vs 1999 Honda Civic Coupe

Question:

Im looking to be able to tow a sport bike ~450lbs+trailer with my 2014 Mustang GT. The car itself is lowered 1.4inch in the rear, 1.2inch in the front. I want to make sure I have the right hitch receiver/hitch combo to carry a single axle trailer to account for the lowered ride height. Or would you recommend performing this towing feat with a completely factory 1999 Honda Civic EX coupe. I thought the added power/braking/grip of the mustang would make a much superior choice. But if the civic can handle it. Who wants to buther their mustang?? : thanks in advance!

I did some checking in the the owners manuals for both the 2014 Ford Mustang GT and the 1999 Honda Civic Coupe for you. The owner's manual for the 1999 Civic Coupe instructs that the vehicle is not designed for and should not be used to tow a trailer. I was able to find the 3.7L and 5.0L Mustang have a maximum trailer weight capacity of 1,000 pounds. Per the owner's manual, the Shelby GT should not be used to tow a trailer.

The biggest concern in towing with the Mustang will be ground clearance. When we installed a hitch on a stock 2014 Mustang convertible, we found the measurement from the top of the hitch receiver to the ground to be 9-1/2 inches. Since your GT is lowered, the ground clearance on your vehicle will be even less. Once the trailer's tongue weight is added, your vehicle will ride even closer to the ground.

If you decide you want to tow with your vehicle, the trailer hitch I recommend for your 2014 Ford Mustang GT is the Draw-Tite Class I Receiver Hitch # 24863. You will need the recommended ball mount, part # 3594. I have attached the installation instructions and an installation video of this hitch for you.

For a wiring harness, you will want the Tow Ready T-one Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118487. This wiring harness will install behind the taillights of your vehicle. I have attached an installation video for you.

I have also attached some help articles on towing and choosing a ball mount for you to check out.
