Troubleshooting Toy Hauler Sway on Trailer When UTV is Loaded

Question:

Hello, I am having some sway issues while towing my loaded 26foot toy hauler with my Blue Ox Sway Pro hitch. Im fine when Im unloaded but when I load my 1200 lb. UTV in the back Im getting some sway. Can I adapt the: Reese Sway-Control Bracket for 2inch Ball Mounts - Class III and IV or Sway Control Tab Weld On 3442 to work with the Blue Ox Sway Pro Hitch? Id like to try either the: Pro Series Friction Sway Control Kit - Economy - by Draw-Tite, Reese and Hidden Hitch - 83660 or Curt Friction Sway Control for Weight Distribution Systems - 17200 Which kit would you recommend or would you recommend another? Thanks for your assistance,

Expert Reply:

The friction sway control units like the part # 17200 are great for helping with sway that gets induced by high wind or passing semi-trucks, but if you are getting sway that wants to occur at all times then friction sway control will not help you.

Since most toy haulers have their cargo area in the rear I can almost guarantee that your problem is that you have too low of tongue weight relative to the overall weight of your trailer. You will want the tongue weight to be 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight as you are ready to tow. The solution would be then to move as much cargo forward in the trailer to try increase the tongue weight to reduce the sway.
