Once you have installed the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the 1999 Toyota 4Runner, item # 118341, you will be able to use the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole, item # 37185, for the basic trailer lighting functions but you will not have the 12 volt power circuit, trailer brake circuit or auxiliary circuit connected yet.

To attach the power circuit you will need to run a 10 gauge wire to the positive post of the vehicle battery from through a 40 amp inline circuit breaker from the black wire on the 7-way connector.

To attach the trailer brake circuit you will need to run another 10 gauge wire from the blue wire on the 7-Way into the cab of the vehicle and attach it to the blue wire that comes from a brake controller (see link). A brake controller will be needed to power electric trailer brakes.

To attach the Auxiliary circuit you will need to decide what function you want it to provide. If you need a reverse light circuit to lockout brakes on boat trailer or power reverse lights on a trailer then you will need to connect the center pole from the 7-Way to the reverse light circuit behind one of the vehicle tail lights. If you need another power source at the rear of the vehicle you can wire the center pole for that using 10 gauge wire and another 40 amp circuit breaker going to the vehicle battery.

The remaining white wire on the # 37185 adapter needs to be grounded to a clean, rust, paint and corrosion free chassis ground.

If you are planning on installing a brake controller and all of the 7-Way wiring on your 4Runner then there is a kit available to make it easy, the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, has all of the hardware needed to install a fully functioning 7-Way trailer connector and a brake controller on your vehicle. I have included links to instructions and an installation video that should help you with wiring your vehicle.
