What is the Capacity of a Round Trailer Axle with a 3 Inch Diameter  

Question:

i just inherited a equipment trailer with 4 wheels . i measured the axles and they are 3inch diameter , but the wheels are 5 lug wheel is just a rim / no centers - dexter and leaf springs are 1 each wheel but really thick .dexter equalizers on both sides . looks like it would be smooth ride but what can the weight capacity be ??? frame is large angle iron . hope i gave enough info to determine a load weight thanks!

Axles rated for 6,000 to 7,200 pounds usually will have 3 inch diameters. But it is possible for 5,200 pound axles or even 3,500 pound axles to have a 3 inch diameter axle. You could err on the side of caution and say each axle is rated for 3.5K for a total of 7K for the 2 axles combined.

But there should be some information somewhere on the axles that indicate the capacity. There could be a tag that explicitly states the capacity or some numbers that would indicate the model of the axle. Until you know for sure I would not put too much weight on it! If you can pull a hub and tell me the inner and outer bearing numbers it would help to determine the probable capacity.
