Resolving Clearance Issues Between Truck Bed Rails and 5th Wheel Trailer
Question:
I own a 6077 18k Demco hijacker autoslide 5th wheel hitch. After last trip noticed a scratch under the left side of the trailer and corresponding small dent on the left side rail of the truck. could this have been improper outrigger adjustment or bracket adjustment? Have never noticed any clearance issues, but could the base rails be sitting too low? They are set in the low position now.

It definitely sounds like you could benefit from raising the height setting on your Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch # DM8550024. We recommend at least 6 inches of clearance between the top of the truck bed rails and the bottom of your trailer. If you find that you are right at or below this distance, this can be adjusted and is likely the reason for the damage you noticed after your last trip.
The Demco Hijacker has 3 possible hitch height settings. It sounds like you are currently at 15-1/2 inches, which is the lowest it can go. Try adjusting it up to the next height of 16-3/4 inches to see if that gives you the necessary clearance. The hitch can also be set at 18-1/4 inches for its highest setting.
