Getting P.L. Code When Using Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller # TK90160 on 2008 Dodge Ram

Question:

I have a 08 Dodge Ram with a Tekonsha 90160 Primus IQ Electronic Brake controller. I have been pulling a camper trailer and everything was working well. On my last two camping trips I started receiving a pl error code intermittently. All the trailer lights are working, but it seems the brakes go in and out. The brakes initially work, but as my trip goes on is when I receive the error code and my brakes work intermittently. I pulled my drums off and found three of the four magnets are worn wear indicators missing. Im looking for guidance as to if this could be my problem or is it something else. If this could be my problem, would you suggest replacing only the magnet or the entire brake assembly.

I spoke to my contact at Tekonsha, and he said that the P.L. code is not very common and as you can see in the picture that I have attached, this code is sometimes mistaken with the O.L. code because it looks so similar.

If you are indeed getting the P.L. code this indicates that power is being interrupted and you will need to use a tester like part # PTW2993, to test the black wire. If the tester is showing constant power on the wire when the manual override is used and you are still getting the P.L. code, the controller will need to be replaced.

The O.L. code on the other hand is going to mean that the controller is detecting an overload or a short and shuts braking down to prevent damage. Since you mention that the brake magnets are worn it is possible that they are getting hot and shorting out. I have attached a link all of our replacement brake magnets for you. Depending on what brakes your trailer is equipped with, we may have one that will work for you.

If you would prefer to just replace the entire brake assemblies, I have included a link to those as well. From the link you can use the filters on the page to narrow your search.
