Recommended Wiring Harness for 2015 Mazda CX-9 With Factory Towing Prep Package
Question:
The Curt 56016 wiring kit indicates it is not for vehicles with the factory towing prep package. Ive got a CX-9 GT with the towing prep package. What do I do for wiring?

Expert Reply:
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # 56016 that you referenced is intended for the Mazda CX-9 without the factory tow prep package, as you noted. Right now the aftermarket makers of wiring harnesses, like Curt and Tow Ready, do not offer a kit for the 2015 CX-9 that has the factory tow prep.
You can still use one of the aftermarket 4-pole wiring harnesses such as Curt # 56016 or Tow Ready # 118520 if you prefer. These may well be less costly than an OEM wiring kit and if all you need is a flat 4-pole type connector then either of these powered converter kits will power your trailer lights while providing isolation and protection for your new car's wiring. These powered converters simply plug in to your taillight connectors and draw the actual power for your trailer's lights directly from the car's battery, through the supplied power wire and fuse holder. This type of active harness provides the best possible protection for your vehicle's delicate electronics.
I have linked an installation video for the Tow Ready kit as well as a helpful article on how to route the power wire for a harness. Both harnesses will install in an identical manner.
