Can Curt Stabilizing Strap # 18050 Hook Be Adjusted For a Better Fit on the Vehicle Hatch
Question:
Gentlemen, Though I will be carrying only one bike on my new Swagman 64670 removed all pertinent parts for 2nd bike, attached to a new Curt 11355 hitch, I wouldnt risk negating any warranty on the rack, so I purchased and received the subject Curt strap. Question 1: Will opening up the angle of the hook damage the protective finish on the hook?..... the gap between the hood/spoiler at the top of the hatch and the cars roof is too tight for the existing angle on the hook. Thanks for your assistance!

You probably can adjust the angle of the hook on the Curt stabilizing strap # 18050 to allow for a better fit on your 2011 Volkswagen Golf. Do note this this modification may void the item's warranty, however. You would want to allow the hook to become warm - say leave it in the sun for a while to gently warm the metal - and also to use either a cloth between the pliers (or other tool) and the hook itself - to protect it. There are also pliers made with cushioned jaws that accomplish the same thing. It is best to make the adjustment in small steps to help avoid metal fatigue at the hook.
A better option may be to reverse the strap by running the thin end of the long strap through the spoiler.
