Can Fulton 3X3 Fold Away Coupler # FHDPB230101 Be Installed on Car Dolly to Fold Upwards

Question:

I just bought a Fulton 3x3, 5000 lb bolt-on fold away coupler. My plan for this is to allow the tongue on my tow dolly to fold down, rather to the side, so I can stand the dolly up in my garage. The dolly only ways about 500-600 lbs, and the car that would be on it is only 2540 lbs, so were looking a a total towed weight of just about 3000 lbs with a tongue weight of less than 200lbs. I see no reason why this shouldnt work mounted in this way. This is a pretty hefty casting made for much more weight than I will ever put on it.

At first glance, the idea you propose seemed like a good idea. However, when the Fulton 3x3 Folding coupler was designed, it was engineered to sustain up and down bouncing forces when installed as intended, so the coupler swings to the side. If it's installed as you mentioned, the tongue weight and bouncing forces will be applied to the folding coupler in a manner that the coupler wasn't designed to withstand. This very well could cause the coupler to fail at the hinge point.

Fulton only recommends installing the coupler as outlined in the installation instructions. If you installed the coupler in any other manner than what's mentioned in the instructions, you would be assuming all responsibility and liability for the installation from that point forward.
