Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Controller Circuit that Activates all of the Time

Question:

Vehicle: 2008 Subaru Tribeca I just purchased and installed the Curt Triflex C24VV with the Universal Brake Control Adapter and the ETBC7. After installing I used the provided tester and tested everything at the 7-way connector plug. The turn signals, running lights, break lights, and power all work fine BUT the electric brake pin position #2, blue wire as shown in the ETBC7 installation guide back diagram has power even without the brakes engaged. It only goes off if I unplug the break controller. I first questioned the cold side break switch wire but verified this wire by disconnecting the break controller at the adapter and tested the corresponding break switch pin red wire at the break controller adapter and it turn on only when I pressed on the break. The break controller seems to power up fine. The single dot comes on and goes off after 10 to 15 minutes just like the installation guide says it should. Any suggestions why I am getting constant power to the electric brakes at the 7-way? I have checked and double checked all my wiring and can not find anything wrong. You can also call me at

You said that the brake controller output circuit was the number 2 circuit on your 7-way. If by that you mean the 2:00 position then you have the circuits flip flopped. The 2:00 position should be the 12 volt accessory circuit, not the brake output circuit. That would explain why you are getting 12 volts all the time.

The brake controller circuit should be the 5:00 position. Check out the diagram I attached to see how it should all get wired up.
