Trailer Hitch and Vehicle Towing Capacities for Curt Hitch # C11412 and 2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI
Question:
I have a 2015 VW Golf TSI with a manual transmission. I see three available models but am most interested in the Curt model 11355. According to the detailed information, the rated GTW is 2000 lbs. and the rated TW is 200 lbs. My question - and forgive me it is dumb/naive - is that VW apparently has still not issued towing capacity limits for this model. Is that any cause for concern? Thanks in advance!

All hitches offered for your gasoline 2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI are light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I types, which include the Curt # C11412. All can be viewed by clicking on the included link. All share the same 200-lb tongue weight (TW) and 2000-lb gross trailer weight (GTW) ratings. All include the required installation hardware and a hitch pin and clip. An install video is linked for you.
It is not too uncommon for a manufacturer of a lighter-duty vehicle to avoid providing a rated towing capacity. When it comes to things like towing, the auto maker gets to have the final word. In certain instances, such as with some hybrid vehicles, the auto makers explicitly warn against towing. The hitches offered for such vehicles are made to allow owners to use hitch-mount accessories like bike or cargo carriers, but not for towing any trailer of any weight. If your owner's manual does not indicate an approved towing capacity then you should not tow with the car.
A Class I hitch CAN be used with a compatible 2-bike hitch rack or cargo carrier such as those items shown on the provided links.
