Can Welded-On Dico Coupler be Replaced with a Bolt-On Type

Question:

I have a bad Dico 60 welded on my trailer. Can I just cut the welds with a grinder and install a Dico 60Z bolt on by just drilling out the holes and installing bolts?

It is certainly possible to replace a welded-on coupler with a bolt-on type so long as the new coupler's capacity is correct for the trailer and it fits the trailer tongue. If you know the trailer manufacturer it is never a bad idea to check with them about doing that retro-fit, just to ensure that they have no concerns about drilling through the tongue for installation of the bolt on coupler. They may also be able to offer you guidance about the bolt grade to use, typically a Grade 5 U.S.

I have linked our main page for bolt-on couplers and you can use the filters on the page to narrow the results shown based on your trailer tongue size, the hitch ball size you need, etc.

For example, if your trailer's tongue is 3-inches and you need a 2-inch coupler size rated for 5000-lbs, then you can use Fulton # F343000301.
