2017 Subaru Outback. I was able to install it myself, but a 2nd person would make it a lot easier. Even with exhaust lowered, the muffler was still just a little bit in the way, but its just the nature of the beast. etrailer had the best prices and selection when I was looking. Great installation videos too. I will primarily be using this for my hitch mounted bike rack.

My 5th Curt hitch and wiring harness...perfect as usual. Always my first and only choice, and etrailer is my retailer!

One year later, still the perfect hitch and perfectly satified.

I got the Curt Class II - 1-1/4 hitch for my 2019 Subaru Outback. The sole use is for my bike rack. The look of the hitch is good and it mounts low under the bumper (no modifications to the body work needed). After a year of use the finish on the hitch looks brand new. Very happy with this product. I recommend etrailer.com as the best place to get your trailer hitch. I’ll be back when I get my next vehicle.

Easy fit, easy install!

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Just installed the hitch. The video explaining installation is awesome. Hitch fit great and was easily installed. Why would you pay someone else to install it when it is so easy. Only thing I wished was that the kit would include 4 (not 2) fish wires. I messed them up when I installed the first two bolts and had to spend time getting them to work with the last two bolts. I also purchased the wiring harness and watched the installation video for it. Video made finding the Subaru furnished connector look easy. It was anything but. After cutting my hand I took the car to the Subaru dealer and paid them $25 to get the plug exposed. Hitch looks great. Would recommend to any one.

I bought the hitch for our 2014 Subaru Outback. The main use is to hold a bike rack that carries two bikes. Installation wasn't too bad besides having to drill holes and fish the nuts through, but this had to be done, due to not having any factory mounting spots. The only issue I have with it is that my exhaust hits it just slightly and rattles. I checked everything and it all looks lined up. I may have to loosen it and pry it sideways and retighten. If that doesn't work I may have to install some rubber tape or something on it.

Were sorry to hear that your exhaust is rattling a bit against your hitch. Because the exhaust system uses rubber hangers, the exact placement of the exhaust can vary slightly from vehicle to vehicle. The same cannot be said for the hitch, as its attachment is rigid, and will occupy the same exact space on every vehicle of the same year, make and model. The good news is that its very easy to manipulate the exhaust hangers a little bit to move things apart far enough where rattling wont be an issue. This happens often enough that weve written a help article about it, which I will link for you below:

I installed the hitch with minimal difficulty - the step-by-step instructions and pictures made it easy to understand. and follow. The most difficult part is raising the receiver and starting the first nuts onto the bolts - a second person or a lift would be very helpful. The method of attaching the guide (fish) wires to the bolts and getting them in place seemed ripe for mistakes. But they all went easily into the mounting holes. I can now tow my utility trailer with ease and confidence. It looks good and does not extend beyond the bumper - no knee knockers!

excellent service when I called to be sure I had the correct part. I misread the label and Donna checked everything and discovered all was good. However, I did not realize that I had ordered the 1.25 inch receiver instead of the 2 inch so you want to be sure of what you order. It installed fairly easy, drilling of holes were required for my application but it was not a huge challenge. Just be aware that you may need to drill and have a correct bit, another thing to check before you order. It is built well and will work perfectly for towing my kayak trailer with my Outback.

Everything is great with the hitch.I use it about three times a week....with my bike rack.

Great looking hitch.
The hitch pin hole
is set back farther then the stock Subaru Outback 2015 hitch.
Thule recommends that the center of the hole be a least 1 1/2 inches back to best support the weight of their bike racks.
The center of the old hitch pin hole was only 1 1/4 inches back, this one is 2 inches back.
The farther back the hole, the better for more support to the bike rack.
etrailer = Great service, great support and had no issues with delivery.
They helped me get all the parts I needed to mount the electrical too!

2014 Subaru Outback Wagon

The trailer hitch itself works fine. Very solid compared to others.

The installation instructions could use some additions. The holes you drill for the bolts and brackets to be fished through the frame tube seem to be very small. I could not get the bolt head to pass through this opening. I drilled a third hole towards the back of the vehicle in order to make the opening larger. Also, I used some Rustoleum spray paint to cover the bare metal from the holes I drilled. After the paint was dry and I fished in the bolts and brackets through the opening. Then, I covered the holes that I drilled with aluminum duct tape. I had a difficult time reinstalling the muffler hanger at the rear most of the car. I seem to have to defy the laws of physics to get it to work.

Product arrived within time specified. Everything fit like a glove.
Next time I order, I'll get the wire harness too, and beat the shipping. To the manufacturer, I suggest wrapping the included hitch in bubble wrapped, and nylon tape or zip strip it to the receiver or better still insert it in the receiver and pin. Mines arrived and had a chance to bang around alot in delivery. The internal box baffle had been pulled loose from its stapled position. Two baffles would be better to keep it centered. Even a styrofoam injection packing. Whatevers cost efffective. Once the receiver and hitch are loose, they poke holes in the shipping box. I didn't lose any parts, but could have, if the bag got loose through a hole. The powder coating survived unbelmished. I love the product and recommend it to anyone looking for and OEM alternative. Simplem and solid!

Good product, and etrailer.com makes it quick & easy via fast shipping and video instructions. My thoughts on the install (I am a mechanically inclined first time hitch installer)

- 90 minute novice install time is everything goes right the first time, and you have all necessary tools in front of you.

- I installed without help, the only hard part was lifting the hitch up into place it. Help from a 2nd person would have sped up the install.

- The 3.6R six cylinder Subaru has 2 mufflers, so there is more time required to lower / reattach the exhaust, and remove / cut / reinstall heat shields (this is not mentioned in the video I don't think). I also recommend using Simply Green to spray rubber muffler mounts to lubricate, allows them to be removed and reinstalled much easier.

- Time was wasted when fishing bolts/brackets as holes I drilled weren't quite big enough (I didn't wanted to minimize width). I tested the hole size for rectangular brackets, but it turns out bolt head width was a bit larger than the bracket and wouldn't fit through the hole. Since I already had the fishing wire pulled through and the bracket in the frame, I had to reverse / remove everything to enlarge the hole (hard to get the bracket back out). Also, on fish wire coil stretched a bit, so it became too wide to pull through the 2nd set of holes.

- The fishing wire is a bit short, there was continual worry it would slip through. A longer wire would alleviate those worries.

The end result is you get a great hitch, and don't have to pay a 3rd party for installation, and save a lot of money. Well worth a small bit of installation hassle.

I received my hitch and had a local garage attempt to attach it, but the hitch was built improperly. I contracted etrailer.com and sent photos of hitch. Ian at etrailer.com shipped a new hitch and a no cost shipping label to return the hitch. Have now had the new hitch attached and fits fine. The bad hitch was a hassle but the customer service was excellent. Thanks to Ian W and George J . Ready to tow my boat.

by:

Had the hitch and electrics installed by my local mechanic. Am satisfied with quality of the hitch. Use it for my bike rack and to tow my 1 ton utility trailer. Good hitch at a fair price.

by:

I use the hitch for pulling my utility trailer and also for my bike rack.
It was relatively easy to install and looks good. It was also much less costly vs. a dealer install. I will continue to use your company. You are prompt and easy to deal with.
Thanks

by:

The hitch went on without a problem. It took about an hour and a half to install. The video was great on how to install it. The hitch looks good and is not a "leg banger" since it does not stick out too far. Works good with the bike rack and will soon be used to pull a small trailer. I am very satisfied.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

I have never written a review for anything I have purchased online before but felt compelled to do so after buying and installing a Curt class II trailer hitch and wiring harness on my brand new 2017 Subaru Outback. I decided to give it a shot myself after watching the absolutely amazing do it yourself videos on Etrailer’s web site. They were absolutely spot on and very easy to follow. When I opened the box containing the hitch, I was more than impressed with the quality of the hitch. Pictures do not do it justice when viewing this on the Internet. This hitch is extremely well-built and very hearty. After watching the video on how to install each item, I tackled the project and completed it with absolutely no hiccups. Super easy to do yourself if you have any mechanical skills. The connector for the wiring harness was located exactly as shown in the video. The whole package arrived on my doorstep in two days! Super impressed with the quality of the product, speed of delivery, and ease of installation. One thing I would recommend strongly is going through from the top to install the hardware. You’re going to have to cut a hole in something to fish everything into the frame where the hitch will be mounted. I just prefer to put a hole in the sheet-metal above rather than drill a large hole in the structure under the vehicle. Just cover it up with a few layers of duct tape and you’re good to go. I also decided to just unbolt both of my mufflers and remove them instead of just letting everything hang down. It made everything much easier to access and helped make quick work of the total installation. Don’t spend hundreds of dollars to have someone put this thing on for you. The dealership was going to charge me nearly $600 to install a Subaru hitch of much lesser quality. I did the whole dxxx thing myself for well under $XXX!!! Git-er done!!! I will be using the hitch for a bike rack and to pull a small ATV trailer with a CanAm Outlander 1000 two-up ATV. Sorry- I forgot to take some pics...

2014 Dodge Journey

We received the hitch for our 2014 Journey on time to install it and start using it the next day. The install went very well. Lubed the exhaust brackets and they popped right off. Route the green wire over the frame and it is plenty long and more secure. Fallowed the wiring and tubing along the frame with the power wire. Everything went well works good and looks good too.

by:

Being a mechanical engineer, I was pleased with the quality of the structure and the welds of this hitch.
Installation took about 1.5 hours of careful preparation and installation. I had trouble removing the rubber exhaust hangers, so I tried to install the hitch with the driver's side of the exhaust still attached. I couldn't do it; not enough room. However, the hangers go on much easier than they are to take off. The tip to use a lubricant (I used dish soap) is worth following.

by:
2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

This is my second purchase from etrailer. As before, the hitch was packaged perfectly and arrived unscathed. The video instructions are super useful and make installation easy. One thing to note is that the fish wire to pull the bolts through the frame is included in the kit. I can recommend this site enough.

This hitch has been everything I could have wanted. The fit (on my 2016 VW GTI) is excellent, and I don't recall it ever scraping, even on steep driveways. After 1 year, there's no sign of undue wear. I recommend this hitch.

Thanks for following up with me. Everything worked well. However, my dog ate most of the wiring from underneath the trailer. So I will need to pull all the old wiring and replace it. If you could point me towards a wiring harness that would work for this I would appreciate it!

  • Which Hitch for a 2015 Honda Accord Needing to Tow a Small Trailer
When it comes to towing a trailer, you're always limited to the capacity of the lowest rated component in your setup. You may be able to add a hitch to your 2015 Honda Accord that would allow you to tow a small, lightweight trailer, but you won't have the ability to use a hitch mounted cargo carrier like the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # C18145 because of the limited tongue weight on your Accord. • Why Does Curt Require Stabilizing Straps for Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks but Draw-Tite Does Not
The stabilizing straps are a warranty requirement that Curt recommends to help support the hitch. Using a strap such as Item # 18050 with a Curt hitch will maintain the warranty and provide additional support. I've attached a review video that shows...
