Expert Reply:
For a 4-pole trailer wiring harness to go along with the Class II hitches made for your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon, Draw-Tite # 36493 and Curt # C12136, you can use Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467.
This kit does include a powered taillight converter that draws power for the trailer lights directly from the battery to ensure that your vehicle wiring cannot be overloaded by power demands from the trailer. The converter is the small black box integrated into the harness.
You can see an installation demo on your same vehicle by clicking on the video link provided.
This wiring harness provides a maximum current output of 2.1-amps for each stop/turn light and 5.6-amps for the taillights. If you happen to know (or if you can measure with a meter) the power draw from your trailer this will enable you to know that this T-One harness has sufficient capacity.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent entry of moisture and dirt that can cause corrosion. You can use part # 11755.
