Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

To install your electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the connector behind your vehicle's dashboard. The exact location of the plug may vary depending on your year, make, and model of truck.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

My Tekonsha P2 & wiring kit 3031-P for my 2017 Tundra Crew Cab arrived timely and installation was SUPER EASY. Connected my 27 foot trailer the same day to test it. Works awesome. Disappointed in Toyota for having a poor Brake Control System, but thankful Tekonsha was able to pick up the slack.

by:

Get this cable for a simple, plug-in installation. You’ll spend more time hunting for the junction already wired into the truck harness than installing your brake controller. And after installed, no worries on loosening wire connections or electrical tape wrap unraveling.

by:

I used this to connect a brake controller, ITEM TK63VR, to the brake harness under the dashboard of my husband's 2022 Toyota Tacoma SR5. It worked excellently and was very easy to do because the ends just snap right into the harness and the little ground wire fits right under the grounding screw. eTrailer's instruction videos are great, thats why this ol' grammy was able to do it herself! Thank you etrailer! PS I just wish that it was a foot longer.

Wiring harness 3031-P on a 2015 Toyota Tundra, doesn't get any easier. I have cut and spliced several brake controller over the years. This is a lot cleaner and very easy.

by:

Day after I ordered this part I was contacted by the company to say that the part wouldn't be shipped for several weeks and they worked to get me a replacement solution. This ultimately did not work out but their customer care was something that has become a rare thing these days. I think the sales agent whose name I do not recall at the moment and a few days later got a notice that the original part I ordered was out for delivery. It arrived today I installed it in my vehicle and everything works perfectly. I would definitely do business with etrailer again for my RV needs. Thank you guys.

Toyota Tacoma

The wiring harness is exactly what most folks need for an under dash or dash mount. I found that it was more convenient to access the brake controller emergency handle and see the brake controller if I took your metal mounting bracket and turned it upside down and mounted the controller on the left hand side of the steering wheel on top of the dash with a magnet taped to the dash. This allow me to remove the controller and move it between my Tacoma and Ford F150 easily. But in order to do this you need a longer wiring adapter, so you either cut the original wiring harness and splice in longer wires or buy two harnesses and cut off one end of each and splice that together. Very happy with both the harnesses and the Tekonsha P3 brake controller.

2023 Toyota Tacoma

Installed my old Tekonsha P2 controller easily in the new truck in about an hour. Wire was just long enough to reach the preferred spot. Fantastic service as usual.

by:

We love our Tekonsha brake controller. Works great on our 2018 Tacoma while pulling our 1025r John Deere subcompact tractor.

by:

Everything came in the package and the product came earlier than I expected. Installing it was fairly easy. However the only thing that proved difficult was Torquing the ball down on the hitch head which luckily [RV dealer] was good enough to do that for me. I am happy With the product and looking forward to using it.

by:

Fit perfectly. did not have to cut into vehicle wiring harness and super quick install

by:
2018 Toyota Tacoma

The cable fits the desired application on my 2018 Tacoma. A couple of inches longer would have been nice - it was barely long enough for where I mounted the controller. The location shown in the pic was the only location that didn't get in the way of of knees, feet or air bags. By the way, the other item in the cubby is my ham radio faceplate.

by:
2019 Toyota Tacoma

Easy installation. This unit is the best controller I have ever had. I utilized my existing inset compartment and just cut off the back of the compartment til I had about 2” remaining from the front flange to minimize the amount of space around the P3 controller when installed to have a better appearance.

by:

Excellent fit and function.

by:
2023 Toyota Tacoma

Great product and super easy to install with the adapter.

by:

to be honest I bought this harness to modify it. I needed the plug that goes into the OEM port on the truck so I would not have to T Tap power to run accessories I simply would tie in my switches to this port to use for what I want. I still have not completed the install.

Works fantastic, no problems, brakes the trailer with proper amount related to truck braking.

by:

Made the install that much easier, take your time pulling off the side cover to get to the wiring harness. Seems like the bottom front plug gave me the most trouble but love how much difference trailer brakes while pulling a heavy load make.

by:

very easy to install

Great product. Used with Tekonsha Prodigy P3. Installed on a 2017 Tacoma to tow our 2020 T@B 400 teardrop camper.

  • What Angle Should Prodigy P3 Brake Controller be Mounted at When Installed in 2018 Toyota Tacoma
When you go to install the Prodigy P3 part # 90195 in your 2018 Toyota Tacoma the controller has to be level from side to side and face directly towards the rear of the vehicle so that the inertia sensor of the controller can get an exact reading on how much braking pressure you are applying and then apply a relative amount to the trailer's brakes. The install harness you need then is the part # 3031-P which plugs into the back of the controller and then into the port under the dash of...

The correct brake controller install harness you need is the part # 3031-P for a Tekonsha controller like the very popular P3 # 90195. The harness you would have had in a 2015 Tacoma would have been the 3040-P which is different.

For your 2018 Toyota Tundra, the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers - Dual Plug In # 3031-P may plug into your Tundra but according to my tech contact it will not work based on their testing. • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver, 7-Way Trailer Connector, and Brake Controller on 2017 Tacoma
Sounds like you're trying to build your own tow package on your new 2017 Toyota Tacoma. We can certainly help you with that. We'll begin with the hitch receiver. I suggest the Curt # C13264. It's a Class III, 2 inch hitch with a gross trailer weight of 6,000 pounds and maximum tongue weight of 900 pounds. Higher than a lot of Class III hitches. It's a fairly straight forward installation because it bolts right to your truck's frame. For a wiring harness to get power to your trailer...

  • Brake Controller and Install Harness Recommendation for 2016 Toyota Tacoma
The correct brake controller install harness to use with a Tekonsha brake controller like our very popular P2 part # 90885 is the # 3031-P. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.
