Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 18004 Review

Today, we're going to review part number 18004. This is the Draw Tite 4-Pole Trailer End Connector. This is 12 inches long. It also comes with the 4 wire caps to attach it to the wires on your trailer. Basically, the standard 4-way wires would be the white for the ground, the brown for the tail lights, the yellow for the left turn and brake, and the green for the right turn and brake, so when you go to attach this to your trailer, you do want to test the wires using a tester to make sure you connect the wires function to function, because sometimes the colors will not always match up. A good thing to do is to use a tester that we sell separately on our website that you can use to test the wires and then hook these wires using the included wire caps. That should do it for the review on part number 18004, the Draw-Tite4-Pole Trailer End Connector. .

Great product no issues at all. Product as described & fit properly.

Pretty straight forward. I used it to switch my European trailer's connection to be able to connect to my Wrangler's 4-pin trailer hookup.
No issues. works great.

The parts are still on my European trailer and working well! The trailer is a German brand and started its life there in Germany being pulled by my American-spec Jeep Wrangler. The trailer’s wiring and the Jeep’s connections needed to be massaged in order to work. The parts I ordered from etrailer and the writeups for the project on your site made it all possible. Now the trailer is titled and registered in Virginia and enjoying its life on this side of the Pacific!

The wiring harness worked great. I used it to connect a back up camera..Instead of fooling around with getting to the back up wires on the tail lights, I just clipped the harness to the wires on the back up camera(one live, one ground) and plugged that into my 4 pole trailer plug in the back of my pickup. when I turn on my headlights. it turns on the camera. It took all of 3 minutes to do that vs God no how long trying to disassemble and reassemble the tail lights to find a backup wire.

by:

received the item in 4 business days, just in time to fix my trailer for commercial lawn service.

Never used wire caps before, they are great. My 4 pole trailer harness actually has 5 wires, to my surprise, and I was able to fit both brown (running lights) in the cap and it works fine. I did wrap it all up with electrical tape to be safe.

by:

Landlord dog chewed up the wire harness and this new has being doing the trick ever since! (Over a year now)

by:

The video on installing the trailer hitch was very helpful to me. I was fooled by the Trailer End Connector. I assumed it was the wire connector that I needed to attach to my car, and there was no wiring instruction. So I struck out there. Fortunately I had someone who knew what they were doing help me to wire the proper connector to my car. Your service overall was fast and I did appreciate all the help we received from you. Perfect product. Great installation instructions. Now I need European adaptor to fit European trailer lights.

by:

Great product easy to install don't care for the clips used my own connectors. E Trailer again exceeds all expectations. Thank You

by:

I ordered the Hidden Hitch with a 4 prong flat blade plug-in, the cover and mount for the plug-in, which I installed on an '09 Hummer. The product seems to be well made, it installed easily and to my surprise it was delivered in two days. Thanks

by:

Great value! Exactly like the original harness plug that came with the trailer 12 yrs. ago. Even comes with 4 wire taps to make a secure waterproof connection.

by:

high quality, exactly as described. etrailer.com is a very useful and knowledgeable website.

by:

The quick connectors made replacing the old bad trailer connection quick and easy.

by:

It did the job, I soldered all of my connections followed by shrink tubing.

by:

Needs butt connectors, not splitters.

by:

Installed easily. I used my own butt splice connectors instead of the ones supplied with the plug.

by:

Exactly what I expected and worked grea t.

Fast shipping. Good packaging. Easy to install. Well made. All in all a great buy!

by:

I was a little worried about ordering this product because the cost seemed cheap!
After receiving it in the mail I installed it right away and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of the product.
The entire process from ordering to fast shipping was a great experience. Pricing and shipping was great and I would definitely recommend this store to anyone.

by:

It really was easy to install. And it continues to work well after one year of use.

by:

It took a little longer to get than expected, but it arrived in good condition. I have not plugged in the lights to check it out yet. Customer service was great...

by:

The product was excellent and worked to perfection.

by:

Great product. Hasn’t let me down yet!

by:

Seems to be ok but the wire length is much shorter than expected. Will still work fine, just be ware.

  • 4 Pole Trailer Connector with Two Wires Connected to One Pin
As for the white ground wire that you mention, this wire should be firmly attached to a clean metal surface on the trailer. As the lights are currently working properly, you are most likely picking up the ground connection through the trailer ball. This is a pretty unreliable connection, and can lead to intermittent light malfunctions or failures. Regarding the current connector on the trailer with the two wires running into one pin, some smaller trailers are wired this way. Instead of...

  • Troubleshooting Running Lights Not Working on a Trailer Towed by a 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon
The problem could be with the trailer connector. If you used the 4-Pole Trailer End Connector, # 18004, that you have referenced, it may be causing problems. Your 1985 VW Vanagon requires the Taillight Converter Hardwire Kit with 4 Pole End, # 119178KIT. Your Vanagon has separate turn and stop lights, that is called a 3 wire system. Most trailers use a two wire system so a converter like the # 119178KIT is required to convert the 3 wire system down to a 2 wire system. I have included a...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Right Signal and Left Brake Stops Working with Headlights On
When the headlights being switched on cause trailer light problems this either means that you have too many lights on the trailer or you have a bad ground somewhere. If your trailer just started doing this and you haven't swapped out or added any lights then a bad ground is the place to start. Check the grounds both on your trailer and your tow vehicle and make sure that they are securely connected to a clean, bare-metal surface. Sometimes even some paint can cause issues so if you just...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Lights that Only Flash When Brakes are Applied
Try improving the connection of the main ground wire of the trailer wiring harness. Make sure it is attached to a clean metal surface. Or you can run all of the trailer wires back to the main ground. This is actually the ideal solution. But you can also check the current grounds for the lights to make sure they are making a solid connection to a clean metal surface. What you described could be an insufficient ground scenario so finding a way to improve the grounds will hopefully fix the...

  • Trailer Running Lights Work But No Stop/Turn Lights After Installing New Trailer Wiring
Thank you for detailing your troubleshooting efforts with the new wiring on your trailer. First, check the ground wires on both the harness and the trailer. Make sure both are tightly affixed to a clean bare metal spot on the vehicle and trailer frames. You can sand off paint and secure the wires to a new grounding point if needed. A weak ground can cause all sorts of weird behavior with lighting. Check all wiring for signs of cracks or worn spots in the insulation that could cause a...

In both 4-pole and 7-way trailer wiring the brake and turn signals are carried on the same wires. On a 4-pole connector like the one # 18004 that you referenced the left turn and brake signals are carried on the yellow wire and the right turn and brake signals are on the green wire. On a 7-way vehicle socket, see the linked photo please, the stop/turn signals are carried on the pins at the 3- and 9-o-clock positions. There are several possible causes for the stop/turn lights on your trailer...

To splice in a trailer end connector such as the 4-Pole Trailer End Connector # 18004 or Hopkins Endurance Easy-Pull Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Connector - Trailer End # HM38134 you will need to match the connector to your wires by function. • Will 7-Way to 5-and 4-Way Trailer Adapter C35FR Fix Flashing Trailer Lights, 2010 Mercedes GL450
If the trailer has LED lights and you are having issues with them not working then you would need to use adapter # C35FR. To plug in a 4-Way, you would just not use the last opening on the adapter. That would be for a 5-Way flat (it works with both 4-Way and 5-Way flat connectors). In the event that the 4-Way on the trailer is not conducive to this design because of a rubber or plastic covering, you may have to trim it or replace the 4-Way end with a compatible one like # 18004.

To begin troubleshooting this problem I recommend checking the connections on your T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118618. Often when one function is not working it is due to a set of connectors not seated together properly. • Troubleshooting Turn Signal Not Working on Trailer After LED Taillight Installation
Based on what you have said, something is off from the installation of the new LED taillights. When it comes to 4-way wiring like the 4-Pole Trailer End Connector # 18004, the right turn signal/stop and left turn signal/stop run on the same circuit. Since you indicated that the brake lights are working the turn signal should as well unless the wiring is off from your light installation. • How to Diagnose a Fuse That Keeps Blowing in a Dodge Grand Caravan Towing a Tent Camper
With this being an intermittent problem, it is definitely going to be difficult to diagnose. I would have assumed there would have been an issue on the trailer side, specifically a ground issue. You may still want to check and make sure all your grounds have good solid connections, but I think it may be something else. Yes it could still be a ground problem when one lighting function is not working on a trailer. The brake lights and turn signals are on the same circuits, one for each side of the trailer, and the running lights have their own circuit. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light. You can determine if the issue is on your 2002 Chevy S-10 by checking its trailer connector with a circuit tester such as # PTW2993. Have someone sit in the truck and turn on the running lights while you test the pins on the connector. If you are not getting any power on the running light pin then that does indicate a problem on the truck side. If the trailer connector on the truck is factory installed then it could be a fuse.
