We have a fit for your 2009 Volvo S40, but Thule no longer uses the Thule 400 XT Aero foot pack. It was replaced by the Thule Traverse foot, or 480XT, and new fit kits. I have a rack that might work for you, but you'd need to be able to remove 12 lbs of weight from each bike, as the rack I'm recommending has a maximum capacity of 60 lbs per bike. Usually the battery pack is a pretty heavy item. If it can be easily removed, it could lighten your bikes enough so that they'll be compatible with the rack.

Since the Swagman XC bike rack, # S64650, has a 1-1/4 inch shank but uses an adapter to fit a 2 inch, it would fit best in a 1-1/4 inch hitch. But it will fit both sizes. And the threaded hitch bolt will reduce a lot of the movement of the rack.

We have not had a chance to install this hitch on a vehicle like your 2009 Volvo S40, but I spoke with my contact at Curt and he said the majority of this trailer hitch will not be visible. The top of the receiver will sit flush with the bottom of your bumper fascia. He did mention that you may be able to see the bottom part of the mounting arms that extend just past the crossbar on both sides.
