Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for Carrying Two 72 Pound Electric Bikes on 2005 Volvo S40
Question:
Hello, I was wondering what options I have for a bike mount for a pair of e-bikes weighing in at 72 lbs a piece 144 lbs Total. I have a 2005 Volvo S40 T5. I was considering purchasing the Hollywood Racks code #HLY84FR and the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch Code# 24781.

I have a rack that might work for you, but you'd need to be able to remove 12 lbs of weight from each bike, as the rack I'm recommending has a maximum capacity of 60 lbs per bike. Usually the battery pack is a pretty heavy item. If it can be easily removed, it could lighten your bikes enough so that they'll be compatible with the rack.
If you can get both bikes down to 60 lbs or less, you'd begin with a trailer hitch. The Curt Class I hitch, part # C11438 would be a great choice. The only hitches compatible with your Volvo S40 are Class I rated with a 1-1/4 by 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and a 200 lb tongue weight capacity. This means that the combined weight of the bikes and rack cannot exceed 200 lbs. The bike racks you mentioned wouldn't work for your needs, because the Hollywood Racks # HLY84FR needs a 2 inch hitch, and there isn't one available for your Volvo.
The Kuat NV 2.0, part # NV12G has a 60 lb per bike capacity, and the masts fold down once the bikes are removed to allow easier access to the vehicle trunk. It includes both a hitch and a cable lock for added security.
If you click the provided links, you can view a product demonstration video for the bike rack I mentioned for you to take a look at.
