For a roof rack with a short set of crossbars confirmed to fit your 2006 Volvo S40 a flush bar setup like the Rhino Rack part # RR49SR will be your best option. The bars attach to the feet but do not extend past the feet at all so the bars are nice and short. It gives the rack a very OEM appearance.
