Availability of 2 Inch Receiver Hitch for Carrying Bike Rack on 2005 Volvo S40
Question:
I need a 2inch trailer hitch to accomodate the bike rack I already have, but you only have a 1-1/4inch listed???.

Expert Reply:
Due to the towing limitations of the vehicle and the attachment points where the hitch would install, only a Class I hitch with the 1-1/4 inch receiver is available for the 2005 Volvo S40.
I'd recommend the Curt Class I hitch, part # C11438.
You could use a hitch adapter like # HTAD to accommodate your existing bike rack, but because using an adapter applies additional leverage to the hitch and its attachment points to the vehicle, using an adapter would reduce the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50%, to 100 lbs. This would mean that the weight of the rack plus the bikes on it could not exceed 100 lbs which is why I don't typically recommend using a hitch adapter.
Your best bet would be to use a bike rack that's compatible with a Class I hitch. The Hollywood Racks Destination bike rack, part # HLY94FR is a reasonably priced option that would be compatible. Due to its unique design, the rack can accommodate many different types of bikes such as bikes with fenders and bikes with step-through frames. The rack can accommodate 2 bikes weighing up to 35 lbs each with tires up to 3 inches wide and wheelbases up to 48 inches. The rack also includes a locking anti-rattle hitch pin.
If you click the provided link, you can see an install video for the hitch as well as a demonstration video for the bike rack I mentioned.
