You'll want to use a circuit tester # PTW2992 to see which of your trailer wires is your positive wire. The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector AT36681 is a 3-wire detector and since you stated you only have two wires (white & Orange) you'll actually want to use a 2-wire detector like the 2-Wire RV Propane Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detector - 12 Volt - White # RS34FR instead. The black wire on this unit is your ground and the red wire will go to your power wire.

The RV Safe # RS34FR Carbon Monoxide/LP gas detector is held to the wall using two screws. Remove the screws and you'll be able to pull the detector from the wall exposing the wiring. The red wire from the detector is connected to a 12-v power source, the black wire is connected to a ground.
I've linked to the installation instructions for you, as well as to a demonstration video. view full answer...
My contact at Atwood advised that the light under the "Propane" label blinking red indicates the propane detector is disabled. The blinking indicates that the sensor is worn out and the unit should be replaced with # AT36681.
For reference the complete instructions, including the procedure for testing this unit, will be sent to you in a separate email. view full answer...
Changing your carbon and propane detector is a very simple process. If installing the RV Safe Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector Item # RS34FR you want to make sure your power is turned off and remove the old unit from the wall. Before disconnecting the wiring observe how it is wired. You simply have 12 volt power going to the unit and a ground.
There will be one red wire and one black wire. The black is ground and the red is power. view full answer...
The 2-Wire RV Propane Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detector # RS44FR can be mounted vertically if needed but most importantly should be installed no more than 18" from the floor so that it can accurately detect the amount of gas in your RV.
Do not mount this detector within 12" of any opening windows, exterior doors, fans, vents, or areas with a draft. To continue, do not mount on exterior walls, within 24" of any cooking appliances, behind furniture or any areas that would block flow to the... view full answer...
The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 does have two power wires which one of them gets ran to the main power source and the other a backup battery. I would verify for sure that you have power to the wire you have ran currently but it would still work with only one wire having power. view full answer...
Those tabs are the answer. They can be pretty tight so you may need a small screwdriver to push them in. If you can get one side or end started then it will be easy to pull the cover off the Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681.
A colleague suggested using a hair dryer to warm up the tabs so that they will be more flexible and less likely to break. view full answer...
If the Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector part # AT36681 continues to beep even after a rest then this can be narrowed down to either a leak or faulty detector. If you shut off the gas supply to the trailer entirely and the alarm still continues to sound then chances are the unit will need to just be replaced. They are electrical devices and although not common, can fail prematurely. If you question the detector another good method to check is a special spray, the Valterra... view full answer...
When replacing your existing detector with the Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 you will not need to disconnect the 12V trailer batteries. It also does not matter which of the two power wires you connect first. The third (black) wire is for ground.
I have attached a short video review on this unit that you can also check out. view full answer...
I took a look at the manual for the Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 and there was no specifications for being a certain distance above the floor, as you can see by the cut outs I added. Floor level is certainly appropriate for a carbon monoxide detector and you'll want to be sure you follow the installation and mounting requirements that are stated in the manual
I have added a link to a video review for you to take a look at as well. view full answer...
The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector part # AT36681 has three wires as you mentioned but only two will need to be used. There are two red wires and one black wire. The black wire is ground and the two red wires are for power. Only one of the red wires will need to be used. The other red wire is for an optional backup power source.
I have attached a wiring diagram to explain this for you as well. Please note that because LP gas is heavier than air, this detector should... view full answer...
Two power supplies are needed for the Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 because if one were to fail it allows the other to act as a backup in case of a gas leak during the power outage. view full answer...
The 2-Wire RV Propane Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detector, # RS34FR can be mounted vertically or horizontally. This should be installed within 4”-18” (10cm-46cm) of the floor as propane is heavier than air where alarm vents are not obstructed to airflow.
Please note the linked installation instructions. view full answer...
Yes, the RV Propane Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detector # RS34FR can be used to replace your 3-wire Atwood Detector. The third wire is just an extra power supply wire in case your first power source were to be depleted. Most likely you have power directly from the battery with the second being wired to your trailer's DC distribution panel in the power center. You can just cap off the secondary power when installing the # RS34FR. view full answer...
The RV Propane Gas Detector, # RS64FR should be installed in the horizontal orientation. This comes with two mounting bracket options to help cover over holes such as you describe. These options are 7-1/4" long x 3-3/8" wide or the second option of 5-3/4" long x 4-1/4" wide. view full answer...
On your Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 there is a circle Reset/Test button on the top right hand corner of the unit. Simply pressing this button should reset the detector and silence any alarms assuming there isn't an internal fault that requires a complete replacement or the unit isn't actually detecting carbon monoxide.
If it goes quiet but then starts chirping again then it could be a failed or weak power source. Make sure that the secondary battery it's... view full answer...
The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 was designed to fit into a cutout like what the picture I attached shows. The wires on the back would prevent it from being able to mount flush.

The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 has three wires though you only need to use two of them - a red for power and black for ground. The other red wire is for an optional back-up power source which is not necessary for normal operation but is a good idea for safety purposes.
If you take a look at the accompanying diagram it is an example of how to wire the detector. The red wire will go to the positive side of your 12 volt power source while the black wire is... view full answer...
The 2-Wire RV Propane Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detector part # RS54FR is not designed for butane but I spoke with the manufacturer and they said if the levels are high enough it will detect this and signal an alarm. The power draw is minimal, 17mA. view full answer...
